Golf is a Game Not Perfect
I read this book a few years ago and found it interesting, I have taken to glancing at parts where I highlighted then, to remind myself to help me keep motivated and ready for the game again when this isolation period is over and I get back out onto the golf course.
GOLF IS NOT A GAME OF PERFECT
written by Dr Bob Rotella with Bob Cullen
Dr Bob Rotella is a performance consultant, clients include Major Champions and many others. In this book published in 1995, it goes beyond just the usual mental aspects of the game.
His Maxims include:
On the first tee, a golfer must expect only two things of himself: to have fun and to focus his mind on every shot.
Golfers must learn to love the challenge when they hit a ball into the rough, trees, or sand. The alternatives – anger, fear, whining, and cheating – do no good.
Confidence is crucial to good golf. Confidence is simply the aggregate of the thoughts you have about yourself.
It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to play any golf shot or putt.
Some of the points covered where I highlighted as reminders.
ON SWING MECHANICS
The Golfer cannot think of any of these details, or any other details during the execution of a shot.
Visualise the shot, wait until your mind was relaxed and focused before hitting the shot.
PRE SHOT ROUTINE
Take two practise swings;
The first one, focus on the mechanics,
The second one, with your focus on the target and feel
HIT THE SHOT
Look at the target, look at the ball, and swing
THE SHORT GAME
Relish getting the ball into the hole
It’s more important to be decisive than correct, a positive attitude makes a great putter
Bobby Jones – “I merely hit the ball, which is possibly the best way of playing golf
